Not all publicity is good publicity

I know I'm about to sound like a fuddy-duddy. (And let's face it, only a fuddy-duddy would even use that term.) I know people will accuse me of being out of touch with hip-hop-era culture, of lecturing like some 1950s chemistry teacher.

But I'll say it anyway: There are athletes who should manage their images a little better, and a couple of Raiders are prime examples.

First is quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who in May was snapped in photos that were originally posted on the site partychaser.com. Check them out here.

The second is wide receiver Javon Walker, who showed up clubbing in Vegas recently and was written up in the Las Vegas Sun's gossip pages.

Let's be clear about this: Neither Russell nor Walker did anything morally wrong. No spousal battery. No dogfights. All they did was party in public. I've done it. You've done it. Maybe it's hypocritical to criticize.

Or maybe it isn't.

In Russell's case, it isn't that he was photographed holding a cocktail. Whatever. It's that he looks sort of clownish in his posturing. (The diamond No. 2 jersey is priceless.) And I'll be perfectly blunt. The dude looks fat in a couple pictures.

This is the guy the Raiders paid $30 million in guaranteed money as a rookie in 2007. He isn't just the starting QB, he's the face of the franchise, counted upon to help lead this team out of the gutter. And one of his responsibilities should be to carry himself with dignity on and off the field.

The party photos don't make me think JaMarcus is a bad guy. But they make me question his judgment.

As for Walker, this is more confirmation that he is a generally likable player who just doesn't learn from his mistakes. When he was beaten and robbed in Vegas a year ago, the most disturbing thing to me was that he had started the night by spraying a dance-floor crowd with champagne " the very same behavior that set off a chain of events that led to the shooting of Walker's Denver teammate, Darrent Williams, a year and a half earlier. Williams died in Walker's arms.

The 2008 beating proved to be an embarrassment to Walker. But here he is a year later, hitting the clubs in the town that made him infamous. If anyone on the planet should hand himself a lifetime ban from the Strip, it's Walker.

The thing is, no one is asking these guys to become monks. They can party all they want. But they should figure out how to do it in a way that doesn't bring ridicule upon themselves and their team.

And spit out that gum!

Comment: Coffee is for closers JaMarcus. Simply put, your pre-career holdout has everybody pissed off and impatient. Win now or get out.

Comment: The problem is his bad taste. With all that money, you can find several ways to look like the elite; or even if he likes jewelry, there are more elegant ways to wear it. As for his weight, I have no problem as long as he can use it on the field: Short yardage situations, and being hard to tackle. Last time he played, he still looked slow, clumsy and relatively easy to down. He should study some film from other heavy QBs (like Roethlisberger) to develope a way of moving on the field.

Comment: Slow news day? So half the NFL is in Vegas, according to your link. Nice to know what you read by the way. That column is the ultimate brain melt. If JRuss becomes a success, and no one knows at this point, trust me to remember all these pos opinions you writers have sprayed on the wall as if they matter.

Comment: One thing that JaMarcus did that drew him the wrath of sports reporters was his blowing off Rich Eisen before last years game in San Diego. Things like this will cause reporters to put a negative spin on their articles about JaMarcus. Some reporters (i.e., Don Banks SI) write articles without any research. Banks wrote how JaMarcus' weight was up there with the D-Tackles before training camp. Apparently SI could not afford the funds for a phone call to any news source down there to follow-up on the story. Reporters begin passing around this story as gospel. Apparently a lie told often enough becomes truth. This story was regurgitated during this off-season as fact. JaMarcus needs to polish his image with the press so that if nothing else the stories about him and the Raiders will become more factual.

Comment: Joe Namath would've rocked that necklace if he was making that kind of scrill in his day.(Phil, FYI scrill is urban slang for money) Seriously though, there's so many things wrong with this situation as a whole I don't even know where to start. I already knew Walker was a wasted roster spot, this just confirms he's an idiot. I wish I could've been in the room when his name came up as a possible FA signing, I would've smacked whoever said it. Russell is just young and dumb. He's definitely not doing anything wrong, but I would expect more discretion from the guy taking $30M from my favorite team. On a sidenote I have a Question for JR. You're a black man in America. Knowing your ancestry is African, doesn't it bother you that people in Africa suffered to harvest those diamonds? You spent what most would need three lifetimes to make on that ugly POS just to flaunt it in public and in some stupid pictures? All I can say is your play better justify even having that necklace made because if you continue on this way it's going to need to be redone in another teams colors.

Comment: GANG SIGNS? -- Fat and bejeweled, JaMarcus also looks like he's flashing gang signs. How wonderful, having him as the face of the Raiders. Oh, and the apologists who rack on Phil for his post sound like jerks themselves.

Comment: The ankle surgery excuse is just that, an excuse... Just as the writer stated, we all party and there ain't nothing wrong with that, but (as long as not Photoshopped), those pics show that Russell is carying waaaaay to much weight (the long fingernails and gaudy jewelry are simply distasteful, but my issue is more so the weight factor) . Russell is signed for $30Mil+ and has access to the best trainers and nutritionist, so even during recovery from surgery he can be kept in shape. Period. (this coming from someone who were very happy when the Raiders drafted him)

Comment: Get a life. I am a professional musician and have seen many celebrities posing for pictures with their drinks in hand. That does not make them bad people or even irresponsible. For you to imply that is lazy and unprofessional. If this is the best you can do for a story, you need to look for another line of work.

Comment: Phil, I think you do a good job but this is a bit lazy of you; these pictures are actually from a birthday part back in early March, in the early portion of the offseason and not too long after Russell had ankle surgery. Apprearances aside, context is important. Doing this in early March is a little different from doing it during minicamps and OTA's, no?
